Description
Turner & Newall (T&N) was one of the world's largest asbestos conglomerates, with operations spanning mining, manufacturing, and distribution across multiple continents. The company originated in 1871 when Samuel Turner established Turner Brothers in Rochdale, Lancashire, initially manufacturing asbestos textiles. Through mergers and acquisitions — most notably the combination with Newalls Insulation & Covering Company — the group grew into an industrial powerhouse.
At its peak, T&N controlled an extraordinary vertical integration of the asbestos industry. The company owned asbestos mines in South Africa, Canada, and Zimbabwe, operated textile mills, manufactured insulation products, produced Limpet sprayed asbestos coating, made Ferodo brake linings and clutch facings, and supplied asbestos-cement building materials through its TAC Construction Materials subsidiary.
The range of asbestos products was vast: sprayed insulation (Limpet), insulating boards, pipe lagging, asbestos rope and yarn, asbestos cloth and blankets, millboard, gaskets, brake pads and linings (Ferodo), clutch facings, and asbestos-cement sheets and pipes. The company worked with all commercial asbestos fiber types — chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite.
The health consequences of T&N's operations were immense. Thousands of workers at the Rochdale headquarters and factories worldwide developed mesothelioma, asbestosis, and asbestos-related lung cancers. The Rochdale area has one of the highest mesothelioma mortality rates in the UK. South African miners who worked T&N's blue asbestos mines suffered devastating disease rates, as did communities near the mines.
T&N faced escalating asbestos litigation from the 1960s onward. Cape plc, a former subsidiary, was sued separately. In October 2001, T&N was placed into administration, unable to meet its asbestos liabilities. Federal-Mogul, which had acquired T&N in 1998, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the United States. The T&N Asbestos Trust was established to process UK compensation claims, while US claims were handled through the Federal-Mogul bankruptcy proceedings.

Comment l'identifier
T&N products were sold under multiple brand names. Limpet sprayed asbestos is a rough, fibrous coating on steelwork and ceilings. Ferodo brake linings carry the distinctive Ferodo brand name. Insulation products may carry the "T&N" or "Turner & Newall" mark, or the subsidiary name such as "Newalls" or "TAC." Asbestos textiles including rope, yarn, cloth, and blankets may bear Turner Brothers labels. In UK buildings from the 1950s-1970s, any sprayed coating, insulating board, or lagging material could potentially be a T&N product. Look for product labels, stamps, and packaging remnants that reference any of the T&N group company names.
T&N products encompass the full range of asbestos risk levels — from highly friable sprayed coatings (Limpet) to non-friable cement products. If you suspect T&N asbestos products in your building, do not disturb them. Engage a UKAS-accredited asbestos surveyor to identify and assess all suspect materials. The management approach depends on the product type: friable materials like Limpet spray and loose insulation require urgent attention and potentially licensed removal, while intact asbestos-cement products may be managed in place with monitoring. All removal work on licensable materials (sprayed coatings, AIB, loose insulation) must be carried out by an HSE-licensed contractor. If you have been exposed to T&N products and diagnosed with an asbestos disease, contact the T&N Asbestos Trust or an asbestos litigation solicitor.
