Description
Asbestos flash guard panels are rigid, flat or shaped boards installed within electrical switchgear, distribution boards, and motor control centres to act as barriers against arc flash events. An arc flash is a sudden, explosive release of electrical energy that can occur during short circuits or equipment failures, producing temperatures that momentarily exceed 10,000 degrees Celsius. Flash guards serve as insulating barriers that contain the arc energy, prevent it from propagating to adjacent circuits or personnel, and resist the intense thermal shock without igniting.
These panels were manufactured from dense asbestos-cement board, commonly known by brand names such as Sindanyo or Cape Board. The asbestos content, typically chrysotile or a chrysotile-amosite blend, ranged from 15 to 40 percent by weight. The resulting material was hard, rigid, and non-combustible, with excellent electrical insulation properties and the ability to withstand repeated arc flash events without structural failure.
Flash guard panels were installed in virtually every type of heavy electrical infrastructure from the 1930s through the late 1980s. They are found in industrial switchgear rooms, substation panels, motor control centres, generator control panels, and large commercial distribution boards. Their function was critical to electrical safety, and their asbestos content was considered a necessary trade-off for the protection they provided before suitable alternatives became available.
The risk from flash guard panels is similar to that of other non-friable asbestos-cement products: low when intact and undisturbed, elevated when cut, drilled, broken, or removed during maintenance or equipment replacement. Electricians and switchgear engineers who work on older installations are the primary at-risk group. Cutting a flash guard panel with a saw or drill generates fine dust containing asbestos fibres, while breaking a panel during rough removal creates larger fragments that can shed fibres.
Modern flash guard barriers use glass-reinforced polyester (GRP), ceramic fibre boards, mica composites, or high-temperature engineering plastics. When older switchgear is decommissioned or upgraded, asbestos flash guard panels should be carefully removed intact and disposed of as controlled asbestos waste.

Asbestos flash guard panels are flat, rigid boards, typically grey or dark grey, installed as barrier partitions inside electrical switchgear enclosures. They may be bolted, screwed, or slotted into place between bus bars, contactors, or circuit breaker compartments. The surface is smooth and hard, and may show arc-damage marks such as carbonisation, pitting, or discolouration. Panels stamped Sindanyo, Cape Board, or bearing Turner & Newall markings are confirmed asbestos products. Any flash guard panel in pre-1990 switchgear should be tested.

Do not cut, drill, or break flash guard panels in switchgear. If replacement is necessary, remove the panels intact by unscrewing or unclipping fasteners. Dampen the panel surface with water mist before handling to suppress any surface dust. Wrap removed panels in heavy-duty polyethylene and label as asbestos waste. If a panel breaks during removal, contain the area, dampen fragments, and collect all debris with a damp cloth or HEPA vacuum. Dispose of all waste at a licensed asbestos facility.
