Description
Asbestos cement HVAC duct, most commonly known by the Johns-Manville brand name Transite, is a rigid pipe manufactured from Portland cement reinforced with chrysotile asbestos fibres at concentrations of 15 to 25 per cent by weight. Unlike standard asbestos cement pipe used for water and sewer lines, Transite duct was specifically designed and installed as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning ductwork in residential and commercial buildings, making it uniquely hazardous because conditioned air passes directly through the asbestos-containing material and into occupied living spaces.
Installation of Transite HVAC duct was most common from the 1930s through the late 1970s, with peak usage occurring in the 1950s during the North American post-war housing boom. The duct was typically buried within concrete floor slabs in slab-on-grade construction, with register boots rising to floor-level grilles. This installation method made the ductwork essentially inaccessible without demolishing the concrete slab, creating a long-term contamination concern that is extremely difficult and expensive to remediate.
The unique health concern with Transite HVAC duct, compared to other asbestos cement products, is the direct inhalation pathway. As heated or cooled air passes through the duct interior, it can pick up asbestos fibres from the degrading internal surface and deliver them directly into the breathing zone of building occupants. A landmark study by the New Jersey Department of Health found unacceptable levels of airborne asbestos fibres in homes served by Transite ductwork, confirming the long-suspected exposure pathway. The interior surface degrades over time from thermal cycling, moisture, and the constant airflow itself.
Identification of Transite duct can be challenging because much of the system is concealed within or beneath the concrete slab. Visible sections are typically found at register openings, where the duct connects to floor grilles, or in utility areas where the duct connects to the furnace plenum. The material appears as a grey, cement-like pipe, often round or rectangular in cross-section, and feels dense and heavy compared to modern sheet metal ductwork.
Remediation options for Transite HVAC duct are limited and costly. Complete removal requires breaking out concrete floor slabs, which is disruptive, expensive, and generates significant asbestos exposure risk. Alternatives include abandoning the in-slab ductwork by sealing all openings and installing a new above-floor or overhead duct system. Some specialists offer interior lining or coating of accessible duct sections to reduce fibre release. Any work on Transite duct systems must be performed by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor with air monitoring throughout the process.

Comment l'identifier
Transite HVAC duct is most easily identified at floor register openings, where a grey, cement-like pipe connects to the floor grille. Remove a floor register and look down into the opening: if you see a rigid, grey, cement-like pipe rather than sheet metal or flexible duct, it is likely Transite. The pipe walls are typically 6 to 10 mm thick with a smooth interior surface that may appear chalky, pitted, or deteriorated. In utility areas, look where the ductwork connects to the furnace plenum. Any home built between 1930 and 1980 with forced-air heating and a slab-on-grade foundation should be considered suspect.
Do not attempt to modify, cut, or remove Transite duct yourself. If you suspect your home has asbestos HVAC ductwork, hire a licensed asbestos inspector to take samples and confirm the material. If confirmed, consult with a licensed abatement contractor about remediation options, which may include duct abandonment and new system installation, interior lining, or complete removal. In the meantime, ensure furnace filters are high-quality HEPA-rated and consider independent air monitoring to assess current fibre levels in your living spaces.
