Asbestos Regulation in Sweden
Regulation summary
Asbestos is fully prohibited in this country. All use, trade, import and manufacture of asbestos-containing materials is banned. Existing asbestos in buildings still requires certified professionals for safe removal and disposal.
Sweden banned all forms of asbestos in 1982 through AFS 1982:Asbest (Arbetarskyddsstyrelsens forfattningssamling), making it one of the earliest countries in the world to achieve a comprehensive prohibition. Earlier restrictions from the 1970s had limited specific applications. Sweden was a leader in occupational health research that helped establish the link between asbestos exposure and cancer.
