Asbestos Regulation in Austria
Regulation summary
Asbestos is fully prohibited in this country. All use, trade, import and manufacture of asbestos-containing materials is banned. Existing asbestos in buildings still requires certified professionals for safe removal and disposal.
Austria banned chrysotile asbestos in 1990 through a federal ordinance (Asbestverordnung), making it one of the earlier EU member states to restrict all forms of asbestos. Earlier EU directives had already prohibited crocidolite (1983) and amphibole varieties (1991/1993). The full prohibition was confirmed under EU Directive 1999/77/CE, transposed before the 1 January 2005 deadline.
