Regulation summary
Asbestos is fully prohibited in this country. All use, trade, import and manufacture of asbestos-containing materials is banned. Existing asbestos in buildings still requires certified professionals for safe removal and disposal.
Belgium achieved a total ban on all forms of asbestos through the Royal Decree (Arrete Royal) of 23 October 2001. Partial restrictions had been in place since 1998, covering amphibole varieties and many chrysotile applications. The 2001 decree completed the prohibition by banning all remaining uses of chrysotile asbestos. Belgium was a significant user of asbestos-cement products, particularly in construction and industrial applications.
