Regulation summary
Asbestos is fully prohibited in this country. All use, trade, import and manufacture of asbestos-containing materials is banned. Existing asbestos in buildings still requires certified professionals for safe removal and disposal.
Notes
Singapore banned the use of asbestos in building materials in the late 1980s. Buildings constructed after 1 January 1991 are unlikely to contain asbestos-containing materials (ACM). The Workplace Safety and Health (Asbestos) Regulations govern the management and removal of existing ACM. If ACM is present and needs to be removed, only MOM-approved Asbestos-Removal Contractors (AARC) may carry out the work. An Asbestos surveyor must be engaged to confirm the presence of ACM before any removal.
