Regulation summary
Asbestos is fully prohibited in this country. All use, trade, import and manufacture of asbestos-containing materials is banned. Existing asbestos in buildings still requires certified professionals for safe removal and disposal.
The Netherlands banned all forms of asbestos on 1 July 1993 through the Asbestos Products Decree (Asbestbesluit), part of the broader Arbeidsomstandighedenwet (Working Conditions Act). The ban prohibits the manufacture, import, possession, supply, and use of asbestos and asbestos-containing products. The Netherlands was a significant consumer of asbestos-cement products, particularly in roofing and construction.
