Asbestos Regulation in Latvia
Regulation summary
Asbestos is fully prohibited in this country. All use, trade, import and manufacture of asbestos-containing materials is banned. Existing asbestos in buildings still requires certified professionals for safe removal and disposal.
Latvia did not have a comprehensive national asbestos ban before the EU-wide deadline. Amphibole asbestos varieties were restricted through earlier EU directives, but chrysotile remained available until the full prohibition came through transposition of EU Directive 1999/77/CE, effective 1 January 2005. Latvia joined the EU in 2004, adopting all acquis communautaire including asbestos restrictions.
