Asbestos Regulation in Italy
Regulation summary
Asbestos is fully prohibited in this country. All use, trade, import and manufacture of asbestos-containing materials is banned. Existing asbestos in buildings still requires certified professionals for safe removal and disposal.
Italy banned all forms of asbestos through Law No. 257 of 27 March 1992 (Legge 27 marzo 1992, n. 257), which prohibited the extraction, import, export, marketing, and production of asbestos and asbestos-containing products. The ban took full effect in 1993 after a transition period. Italy had been one of the largest asbestos consumers in Europe, with the Eternit factory in Casale Monferrato becoming a global symbol of asbestos contamination and corporate negligence. The town experienced one of the worst mesothelioma clusters in the world.
