Asbestos Regulation in Ireland
Regulation summary
Asbestos is fully prohibited in this country. All use, trade, import and manufacture of asbestos-containing materials is banned. Existing asbestos in buildings still requires certified professionals for safe removal and disposal.
Ireland banned chrysotile (white asbestos) on 1 January 2000 through the European Communities (Marketing and Use of Dangerous Substances and Preparations) Regulations 1999. Earlier EU directives had already prohibited crocidolite (1983) and amphibole varieties through the 1990s. The 2000 ban completed the national prohibition of all six asbestos fibre types.
