Asbestos Regulation in Greece
Regulation summary
Asbestos is fully prohibited in this country. All use, trade, import and manufacture of asbestos-containing materials is banned. Existing asbestos in buildings still requires certified professionals for safe removal and disposal.
Greece did not enact national legislation banning asbestos before the EU-wide deadline. The prohibition came through transposition of EU Directive 1999/77/CE, which required all member states to ban all forms of asbestos by 1 January 2005. Greece relied on the EU harmonization framework rather than enacting an earlier national ban. Significant quantities of asbestos-containing materials remain in Greek buildings, particularly from the 1960s-1980s construction boom.
