Definition
Asbestos insulating board (AIB) is a semi-rigid manufactured board containing asbestos fibers β typically amosite (brown asbestos) or chrysotile, at concentrations of 15β40% by weight β bonded in calcium silicate or similar inorganic matrices. Manufactured for use as fire protection, thermal insulation, and structural lining, AIB was commonly installed as ceiling tiles, wall and partition panels, fire doors, soffit boards, and encasements around structural steelwork in commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings. Unlike fully bonded asbestos cement, AIB is considered semi-friable: it cannot be crumbled by hand when dry, but cutting, drilling, sanding, or breaking it releases fibers more readily than bonded materials. Because it combines high asbestos concentrations with relatively easy fiber release, AIB is classified among the higher-risk ACM types in most national regulatory frameworks. Work involving AIB typically requires a licensed or certified contractor, even for minor interventions.

ACM (asbestos-containing material) is any material with more than 1% asbestos by weight. At peak use, ACMs appeared in over 3,000 different products: insulation, fireproofing materials, roofing, flooring, and cement products. Buildings must be surveyed for ACMs before renovation or demolition, and any found must be managed or removed to protect occupants and workers.
Amosite (Brown Asbestos)
An amphibole asbestos (CAS 12172-73-5) with straight, brown-gray fibers, also known as grunerite asbestos. Considered the second most dangerous type after crocidolite, amosite was commonly used in cement sheets, pipe insulation, thermal insulation products, and ceiling tiles. Its needle-like fibers are highly durable in lung tissue and strongly associated with mesothelioma and lung cancer.
Friable Asbestos
Asbestos-containing material that can be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand pressure when dry. Friable asbestos releases fibers more readily than non-friable asbestos and is therefore considered more dangerous. Common examples include pipe insulation, spray-on coatings, and thermal insulation. Friable materials require specialized handling, removal, and strict containment.
Asbestos Insulation
Asbestos insulation refers to any thermal, acoustic, or fire-resistant insulation material that contains asbestos fibers. It was applied in several distinct forms, each with a different risk profile. Spray-applied insulation (the highest-hazard type, 50β85% asbestos by weight) was sprayed onto structural steelwork, ceilings, and walls for fire protection; it is highly friable and can shed fibers without deliberate disturbance. Pipe lagging and boiler insulation (pre-formed sections wrapped around hot pipes, tanks, ducts, and boilers) commonly used chrysotile, amosite, or crocidolite; in poor condition, it presents high exposure risks for maintenance workers. Loose-fill insulation (blown into wall cavities and roof spaces) is extremely friable once disturbed. Rope and blanket insulation was used around industrial equipment and furnaces. The asbestos type varied by product and era β chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite were all used in different insulation products. Asbestos insulation, particularly spray-applied and loose-fill forms, is subject to the most stringent assessment and removal requirements under most national regulations.
