Notas
Blue (crocidolite) asbestos banned since 1985 by Ministry of Manpower decree. White chrysotile asbestos remains legal and widely used — Indonesia is one of the world's largest importers, mostly from Russia. Approximately 90% of asbestos consumption goes into corrugated roofing sheets. An estimated 13% of all homes and ~50% of buildings in Jakarta contain asbestos cement. In March 2024, the Supreme Court ruled that all asbestos-containing products must carry health warning labels in Bahasa Indonesia. The city of Bandung has prohibited asbestos in new buildings. Current national regulations only classify crocidolite as a hazardous B3 material with minimal enforcement (fines ~US$7). An estimated 1,600 people die each year from asbestos-related diseases, though the real toll is likely higher due to underdiagnosis. The 2018 Lombok earthquake exposed widespread asbestos contamination when damaged roofs were bulldozed without proper removal. The "Asbestos-Free Indonesia 2035" movement is gaining traction, and campaigners hope the Supreme Court ruling will push the government toward a full ban.
