Descripci贸n
Asbestos vinyl wall covering refers to vinyl-faced wallpaper and sheet wall coverings that were manufactured with an asbestos-containing backing layer. Produced from the 1940s through the late 1970s, these products featured a decorative vinyl surface bonded to a felt, paper, or fabric backing reinforced with chrysotile asbestos fibres. The asbestos content, typically ranging from 5% to 25% by weight, was concentrated in the backing layer rather than the visible vinyl surface, making it impossible to identify by visual inspection of the finished wall alone.
The addition of asbestos to the backing layer served multiple purposes. It provided dimensional stability, preventing the wall covering from stretching, shrinking, or warping with changes in temperature and humidity. It improved fire resistance, meeting building code requirements for wall finishes in commercial and institutional occupancies. It also enhanced the durability of the adhesive bond between the wall covering and the substrate, extending the service life of the installation.
Vinyl wall coverings with asbestos backing were installed in a wide range of settings including hotels, hospitals, schools, office buildings, restaurants, retail stores, and residential homes. They were particularly common in high-traffic areas where a washable, durable, and fire-resistant wall finish was desired. The products were installed using standard wallpaper hanging techniques, with adhesive applied to the wall or the backing, and the covering smoothed into position.
The risk from asbestos vinyl wall covering is rated as mixed friability and low-to-moderate risk when in place. While the vinyl surface acts as an effective encapsulant that prevents fibre release during normal occupancy, the backing layer becomes a hazard during removal. Traditional wallpaper removal methods, including steaming, soaking, and scraping, directly attack the asbestos-containing backing. Steaming softens the adhesive and backing, releasing fibres into the steam-laden air. Scraping physically dislodges and pulverises the backing material. Dry-stripping tears the backing and generates fibre-laden dust. Any of these methods applied to asbestos-backed wall covering without appropriate controls creates significant airborne fibre concentrations.
The concealed nature of the asbestos in these products makes them particularly treacherous. A homeowner or decorator stripping wallpaper in a pre-1980 building may have no reason to suspect that the paper backing beneath the decorative vinyl contains asbestos. This lack of awareness has led to countless uncontrolled exposure events during residential and commercial renovation projects.

C贸mo identificarlo
Asbestos vinyl wall covering cannot be identified by the visible vinyl surface alone. The asbestos is in the backing layer, which is only visible when the covering is peeled away from the wall. If a wall covering in a pre-1980 building has a backing that appears fibrous, felt-like, or has a grey or brown papery layer with a mineral texture, asbestos should be suspected. The backing may remain stuck to the wall when the vinyl surface is pulled away. Any vinyl wall covering in a building constructed or renovated before 1980 should be tested before removal, with a sample taken that includes both the vinyl face and the full thickness of the backing.
Riesgo sanitario y friabilidad
Do not steam, soak, scrape, or strip vinyl wall covering in pre-1980 buildings without first testing the backing for asbestos. If the wall covering is in good condition and undisturbed, it poses no risk and can be left in place or painted over. New wall covering can be applied directly over the existing material. If removal is necessary and asbestos is confirmed in the backing, hire a qualified asbestos professional who will use wet methods, HEPA-filtered equipment, and appropriate containment to prevent fibre release during stripping.
