Descripción
Asbestos paper is a thin, flexible sheet material made from asbestos fibres, typically chrysotile, with minimal binder. Asbestos content ranges from 80 % to nearly 100 %, making it one of the most concentrated asbestos products by weight. The paper was manufactured in thicknesses from less than 1 mm up to approximately 3 mm, produced using wet-forming processes similar to conventional paper manufacturing.
Asbestos paper was used extensively from the 1920s through the 1970s in a wide variety of applications. It served as a thermal insulator inside HVAC ducts, around flue pipes, and within fire-rated door assemblies. Electrically, it was used as insulation in wire and cable wrappings, transformer windings, and switchgear panels. In construction, it was applied as a membrane beneath vinyl floor tiles, as a flashings component, and as a liner in corrugated roofing systems.
The material is classified as friable because it tears easily and generates visible dust when handled, cut, or removed. Even aging and slight mechanical abrasion can release respirable fibres. The extremely high asbestos content means that any disturbance produces substantial fibre concentrations in the surrounding air.
Asbestos paper is frequently found concealed within assemblies, making it easy to overlook. It can be hidden inside fire doors, sandwiched between duct layers, or placed beneath flooring materials. A thorough refurbishment and demolition survey is necessary to identify it, and bulk sampling with laboratory analysis (polarised light microscopy or transmission electron microscopy) is required for positive identification.
In the UK, asbestos paper removal typically requires a licensed contractor due to its high friability. In the US, OSHA regulations require Class II work procedures at minimum. Workers must use appropriate respiratory protective equipment and work within controlled conditions to prevent fibre release.

Asbestos paper appears as a thin, flexible, grey-white or buff-coloured sheet that resembles stiff tissue paper or thin cardboard. It tears easily and may produce visible dust when handled. Look for it inside fire doors, around flue pipes, beneath vinyl floor tiles, and within HVAC duct insulation layers. It often has a slightly fibrous texture visible to the naked eye.
