Asbestos bitumen waterproofing encompasses a range of products where asbestos fibres are combined with bitumen to create flexible, waterproof membranes, coatings, and adhesives. These products were manufactured from the 1930s through to the mid-1990s and used for flat roof coverings, damp-proof courses (DPCs), foundation tanking, gutter linings, and industrial floor coatings.
The asbestos content in bituminous waterproofing products typically ranges from 5 to 15 per cent, with chrysotile being the most common fibre type. The asbestos reinforcement gave the bitumen matrix greater tensile strength, flexibility, and resistance to cracking under thermal movement. It also improved the material's longevity and ability to bridge small cracks in the substrate.
Asbestos bitumen products are found in several distinct forms. Sheet membranes, produced by saturating an asbestos fibre mat with bitumen, were laid on flat roofs and beneath concrete floors as damp-proof membranes. Liquid bitumen coatings containing asbestos were painted onto foundations, retaining walls, and metal gutters. Bituminous adhesives with asbestos were used to bond roofing felts, floor tiles, and insulation boards.
In their intact state, asbestos bitumen products are generally non-friable because the fibres are encapsulated within the sticky bitumen matrix. The risk increases when the material is removed, cut, heated, or allowed to dry out and become brittle. Heating bitumen-asbestos products — for example, when using a torch to strip old roofing felt — is particularly dangerous because it can release both asbestos fibres and toxic bitumen fumes.
If asbestos bitumen waterproofing is discovered during renovation or demolition, it should not be heated, torn, or dry-scraped. A licensed asbestos contractor should assess the material and carry out removal using appropriate methods, which may include controlled wetting, careful peeling, and sealed containment of waste. All asbestos-contaminated bitumen waste must be disposed of at a licensed hazardous waste site.

Asbestos bitumen waterproofing is typically black or dark brown and has a tar-like appearance. Sheet forms may show a fabric-like reinforcement layer when torn or cut. Old bituminous coatings may appear cracked, dry, or chalky on the surface. The presence of a fibrous mat layer within a bitumen membrane is a strong indicator of asbestos content. Any bituminous waterproofing product in a building predating 1995 should be sampled and tested before disturbance.

All waste must be double-bagged and disposed of as asbestos waste.
